About refunds, cancellations and "no shows"... This class and my reputation are important to me and I would expect it to be equally important to those who choose to trust me with their education (and their money), and although I have never (never) cancelled a class that was not due to an act of God (once!) It would only be reasonable to assume it could happen again (but the odds are against it). If this were to happen it is not uncommon for people to assume the worst and jump to a conclusion I would like to avoid. I have no want, need or desire to cheat anyone and in fact have been on the receiving side of this situation and it kinda pissed me off (so I know how it feels). That being said, my business is not huge by any scope of the imagination and would like to avoid this occurrence. So this is how I approach it; If you pay up front, (online or by other means) It is with the understanding that I will do all I can (and with every intention)) to provide you the class and all associated services on the date agreed upon. If by act of God, or some unavoidable situation you cannot make the class you will have two (2) opportunities to reschedule and I will do all I can within reason to meet your needs. If you go beyond this limitation it will incur a $25.00 rescheduling fee. The assumption (bottom line) will be that this is a non refundable situation unless there is some inability on my part to provide my end of the bargain with the same two (2) rescheduling options and $25.00 penalty (back to you). The bottom line is that we will work together to get it done. Finally, "no shows", I would expect a heads up anytime this were to happen as it takes me a couple hours just to set up and IF there was no notification it would leave me....grumpy, and not receptive to further attempts. I am a pretty understanding guy but you gotta help me out here. End rant, Dave
Methods of Payment and assorted Important relevant Information Just so you know I am a big believer in good old fashioned "cash". However, in this day and age of Credit Cards, Debit and the not so used occasional check... I understand the need for flexibility and this online pay option is the solution for a growing number of potential students I have begun to encounter. Here's my view on it; I like cash as it is immediate and solid when it is in hand. (gives me a warm fuzzy feeling) Checks I take with a cautious optimism under the belief there will be no problems and awkward moments. I understand "stuff happens" just would prefer it does not happen to me. Online Pay is cool (just new to me) and when it comes to computers I am definitely on a learning curve and am under the (hopeful) belief I will feel much more comfortable down the road about this. Nuff said, Dave
Lets talk about the range issue...some more! It has come to my attention that there are some who are concerned with the travel time and distance relative to the range portion of the class and believe me it is a constant source of stress on my end as well. Here's why; I am aware that my class is typically more expensive than most and would like someday to remedy that somewhat, but the cost of the range and the travel expenses (toll tags, mileage etc,) are part of the necessary evil. I try very hard to offer something most Instructors can't (or won't) all in one day (and do it right) and it is what typically brings people to my door. I know the perception of a long, all day event where you are required to be in attendance to achieve the end goal is never the best solution in this time intensive world, and is something we are often not willing to spare (trust me, I'm with you), and know these are usually my days off when i teach. I'm very sensitive to what my students are perceiving and am constantly worried about their experience with me. That being said, it is in reality JUST ONE DAY and it goes by faster than most realize. I've been doing this awhile and have gotten comfortable with my system and smoothed out a lot of rough spots. Ranges are dying out left and right and the ones that are left are not always the best (or safest) solution. This coupled with some ranges NOT allowing outside Instructors to use their range for classes has left me a little dry and following the path of least resistance. I have a very high requirement for safety as well and should not be confused with a less than professional attitude and a habit of alienating their customer base and confusing it with a safety issue. There can be a reasonable balance (I've learned this personally) In closing I would ask you to trust me to do my thing and know that it is what I feel is the best and safest current solution available. And remember it is just a day. Thanks Dave
The Garland Public Shooting Range Is my current range of choice (private classes & stand by back up range) as they are well established (1969), are open 365 days out of the year, are very safety conscious (the best I've seen) and are just good people in general. Directions are George Bush east to the very end, take Fire Wheel (for about 1/2 mile) south to Pleasant Valley Rd and go east about a mile, over the bridge and just beyond the trees look off to the right (quick!)and there you are. You get a range card on the first visit ($20.00) that never expires until you do and from then on out it's $10.00 all day (just don't lose the card!). Dave
Fair Warning Clause... Since I have started teaching the class at Sportsman's Warehouse I have attempted to form relationships with several area ranges and this has been met with less than ideal results. Everything from liability issues to cost, from enviornmental problems (weather/ flooding) to a consistant history of unsafe practices or lax range rules. Less than friendly enviornments and diminishing resources has left me constantly trying to solve this problem. Ranges are not as plentiful as some might think and the ones that are available may still not be the overall best choice. When I say I willl teach a class it is pretty much set in stone (in my mind) and I will do what I have to do (go where I have to go) to get the job done (hopefully in one day). My only limitations are what the class will bear and tolerate. Trust me when I say I want to get this part of the class done as safely and effeciently as I possibly can. Dave
Elm Fork Shooting Park This seems to be the best solution on the west side (Sportsman's Warehouse classes) I have little experience with them as yet but just recently got in touch with the owners and staff and they seem unusually friendly in relation to the typical ranges that I run into (this is a good thing!!!) I keep running into people who use them and they have nothing but good things to say about them. The down side is they have suffered from the recent rains (flood plain) and this option could be subject to change dependent on the rains. I am optimistic however as this has got to be a temporary "hitch". Range fees are an all day flat rate of $15.00. Directions can be found online through one of the online map services.
